The inhabitants of Zgorzelec have an opportunity to rest and relax at "Witka" lake 11 km away from Zgorzelec or at the picturesque barrier lakes ZBotnickie and Lesnianskie. In those resorts people might use the bungalows, water sports equipment hiring estblishments or take up sailing. Only less than an hour drive enables to visit the Karkonosze Mountains, the Izerskie and Zytawskie Mountains with their famous resorts such as Karpacz, Szklarska Poreba, Harrachow, Swieradow Zdroj, Oeubin. Covering the same distance allows to visit Dresden and "Saxon Switzerland". Art lovers have a possibility to walk across the pearl of the Lower Silesian architecture - Goerlitz - with its 5.5 thousand places of historical interest, called the mot beautiful German town. There is also a Zoo, a Planetarium, a Skansen museum and a few other museums. 2002 was the beginning of the inundation of the former coalmine in Berzdorf (5km away from Goerlitz). Thanks to that proces, the biggest lake in Saxony will be created. The area around the lake has aready been bought by companies which plan to create recreational facilities and water sports centre there. Filling the lake is planned for about 5 years, and will result in creating a lake of about 4 km square and 70 m of depth.
