A village on the Zgorzelec Plain lying on the Czerwona Woda River. The name of the village is probably of Slavonic descent and originates from a marten, a very common animal in our area. The first known owners of the village ore the Gersdorfs who ruled Kunow as early as in 1390. After the local line of the Gersdorfs had died off (1538), King Ferdinand I transferred the village to Sigmund von Warnsdorf. On the initiative of this line, at the end of the 15th century a magnificent palace was built in the village, which was subject to various reconstructions in the 18th century and in 1824. Two carved Renaissance portals adorned with the Warnsdorfs' blazons and the fragments of sgraffito decoration remained. The chapel added to the palace is worthy of notice.
